What to expect at SXSWi, part 4 The big picture

The breakout Web app at SXSWi 2008 was arguably Sched.org, which one of the founders of music blog aggregator The Hype Machine created as a way to let conference-goers organize their agendas. But its event-centric focus meant that it didn’t catch on the way Twitter did in 2007. I’m pretty sure we won’t see another Twitter-like breakout this year, and I think most veteran SXSWi-goers would agree. That was a case of the perfect time and the perfect place, and two years later it’s still

ICANN names new CEO

A global nonprofit, ICANN is responsible for assigning and managing Internet domain names and IP addresses, among other tasks.

However, Beckstrom resigned his government role in March after complaining of interference from the National Security Agency.

But Beckstrom’s comments upon his appointment reflect faith in the organization.

ICANN has been criticized over the years for a host of reasons, including internal squabbles, the fees it levies, and the p

Adobe patches critical Flash hole

Flash is very widely used in browsers to power features such as interactive stock charts and YouTube video streaming.

Adobe has released a patch for a critical Flash Player problem that could let attackers take over people’s computers through content viewed in a browser.

This was no abstract, theoretical vulnerability, either.

“There are reports that this vulnerability is being actively exploited in the wild via limited, targeted attacks against Adobe

Live blog Microsoft, Nokia ink mobile Office deal

“This is really about creating a formidable challenge for RIM rather than anyone else,” Oistamo said, referring to BlackBerry maker Research In Motion.

Call ends.

“Should have been using a Nokia cell phone,” Elop recovered nicely.

Oistamo said that the deal is not really about the iPhone.

Questioner asks why this shouldn’t be seen as a sign Windows Mobile won’t dominate the smartphone market. “There will continue to be competition

Apple readying MacBook makeover

(Credit:
CNET)

Apple is getting ready to introduce a slimmer, lighter MacBook, according to an Apple blog citing unnamed sources.

Indeed,
Mac sales have been very impressive lately. Data provided by market research firm IDC showed the entire PC industry down more than 3 percent for April, May, and June, but Apple sold 4 percent more computers that quarter than it did during the same quarter in 2008. The company’s laptops were responsible for that surge: MacBook a

FluidHTML seeks to bridge Web programming divide

The approach holds some promise–but it also poses some risks. It may be complicated trying to get HTML and Flash programmers to work together, but at least those are established disciplines. FluidHTML requires a language known by neither set of coders right now, and the technology is supported just by a start-up still seeking its own programming staff and $1 million to $2 million in venture funding.

FluidHTML shows its technology to build Flash applications with HTML-style progra

This Twitter look-alike requires 1,400 characters

Let us bark for a literary future.

Naturally, it is hard to quote a woof in full. However, woofs seem to vary between disquisitions on Twitter, such as this from the culturally monikered Sendafart, to this peculiar effort, consisting of the word “aaaaaaaaaaaaa” and purporting to come from the quill of former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin.

When you look at the site’s three principles of woofing, you begin to believe that Woofer

Office, Windows get critical patches

Actually, not all versions of Office are affected, as the Web components issue does not affect the latest version–Office 2007. For a list of Office programs affected, see this security bulletin.

As is its practice, Microsoft said last week that the patches were coming.

“There’s no break from patching this summer,” McAfee Avert Labs’ Dave Marcus said in a statement. “Microsoft is playing catchup with these patches as cybercriminals have already used some of the seriou
